The 46-bed unit, based in the hospitals north building, covers three floors and is run by a multi-disciplinary team of experienced consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, neuropsychologists and dieticians.
Within one working day of admission, members of the team meet with the patient and their family to agree achievable personal goals and discuss their rehabilitation programme.
They welcome patients from all over the world and each patient has a unique rehabilitation programme to match their own cultural and community needs.

Every room is equipped with facilities to make each patient’s stay as comfortable and as convenient as possible, with plenty of space for visiting family members and friends. The focus of the unit is to provide a team approach to the rehabilitation of people who have challenging neurological conditions.
Facilities including three gyms and a hydrotherapy pool provide the highest quality care to maximise patients' functional abilities, help them return to life at home, and assist with psychological and emotional support in adapting to disability.

There are certain common symptoms of a stroke including the following:
- Paralysis or weakness of one side of the body
- Dysarthria - muscles of speech impaired causing slurring
- Dysphagia - muscles of swallowing impaired
- Visual deficits - double vision, decreased visual acuity
- Sensory impairment - absent or diminished response to touch, pain, pressure
- Dysphasia - difficulty in expression and/or comprehension
- Intellectual impairment - memory loss, poor judgement or reasoning
Despite the seriousness of the condition, there is now much that can be done to improve the life of a stroke victim and much that can be done to help the patient's family cope longer term. The sooner rehabilitation treatment begins, the better the chance of a good outcome.
