The Stroke Unit at Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth is one of the best equipped centres for stroke patient aftercare and rehabilitation in the UK.
Stroke services
The Stroke Unit provides initial care and treatment for stroke patients, on-going rehabilitation as part of the recovery process following a stroke, and assessment following TIA (transient ischaemic attack).
St John & St Elizabeth’s understand that a stroke is a frightening experience for the patient and their family. It involves immediate medical treatment and sometimes months of ongoing rehabilitation. They recognise that it can be very confusing trying to understand what has happened as well as learning about the practical steps needed to help the affected person make the best possible recovery.
The staff at St John & St Elizabeth see each person as an individual and aim to work in partnership with their patients and their families to ensure the best medical care and fullest possible recovery following a stroke.
Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth is a fully accredited BUPA Rehabilitation Unit.

Emergency care for stroke
A stroke is a medical emergency. Patients with suspected stroke should gain access to specialist care by the fastest route possible.
For those patients whose suspected stroke has occurred within three hours, we recommend urgent admission to the nearest A&E department, so that, if appropriate, thrombolysis – “clot busting medicine” – can be considered.
PLEASE NOTE: Thrombolysis is NOT available at Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth.
