Priory Group: Depression treatment in the UK

The Priory Group

The Priory Group is Europe's leading independent provider of acute mental health services including depression treatment. They are passionate about providing the highest standards of care in healing, supportive environments and aim to work with their patients, residents and students to help them take control of their lives.

The Priory provides treatment for a variety of different types of depression including mild depression, bi-polar (manic) depression, clinical depression and post natal depression. The Priory Group offers a range of successful, evidence-based talking therapies for people with depression who are looking for some extra help and support in their life. The Priory's therapy services are very popular because they are flexible, cost-effective and are tailored to meet each individual's personal circumstances and lifestyle commitments.

Clients seek out the Priory's therapy services for a variety of reasons and from various different referrers. Some may refer themselves; some may be referred by their GP or occupational health physician because they require therapy and neither need nor want to be admitted to hospital; some people may be referred by a consultant psychiatrist because they require more intensive therapy than outpatient care; or some people may have been recently discharged from hospital and will use therapy as a stepping stone from inpatient care to discharge. All patients are assessed before entering therapy to enable the therapist to develop a personal therapy programme that meets their individual needs.

Priory Group - Depression 2

The Priory Group's heritage of clinical expertise allied with its strong clinical governance structure guarantees that their therapy clients are given the best quality care by the highest qualified clinical staff.

Trained, accredited therapists

The Priory is committed to the highest standards of clinical practice. All of their therapists are fully trained and are registered with the appropriate professional body for their specialty. In turn, these governing bodies provide support for therapists through accreditation and supervision to help them achieve and maintain the best possible standards.

The Priory offers both group and one-to-one therapy. Their programmes consist of a combination of psychological therapies, psycho-education, relapse prevention groups and healthy lifestyle or creative groups, depending on individual need. Clients can attend for day, half-day or individual sessions on a daily or weekly basis.

All therapy units maintain close links with Priory hospitals, consultant psychiatrists and other acute mental healthcare professionals, providing continuity of care if inpatient treatment becomes necessary. The Priory accepts publicly, privately and self-funded therapy clients and are recognised by all major private medical insurers.

Depression therapy centres in the UK

The Priory currently has 18 therapy centres spread across the UK. Whilst most can be found within the Priory’s acute hospitals, they also have stand-alone therapy centres in central London, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Canterbury.

Priory Group - The Priory Hospital Bristol

The Priory welcomes patients from the NHS and the independent sector. They accept referrals from GPs, consultant psychiatrists, SCT and PCT commissioners, CAMHS, general adult psychiatry services, drug and alcohol services, and psychotherapists.

The majority of referrals are made through the patient's GP. A referral can be made to the appropriate hospital's Admissions Office by telephone, email, fax or in writing. The Admissions Office then passes the patient's details on to the appropriate consultant psychiatrist. The Priory accepts 24/7 referrals. Urgent or out-of-hours appointments and admissions can be arranged immediately by telephoning the appropriate hospital.

To make a referral please contact the relevant hospital.
