Gastric banding and gastric bypass consultation
At your outpatient visit, you will chat to their team of obesity surgery specialists (consultants, nurses and dieticians) who will look after you throughout your treatment. They can help ease any worries you have. You will have the chance to ask any questions you may have thought about before your visit, or simply ask any that spring to mind on the day. Their aim is to make sure that you are fully informed before deciding whether to go ahead with your weight loss surgery.
Your appointment can take up to two hours and you can bring a friend for support. Sometimes further tests maybe needed on the day, or you maybe ask you to come back another day, and reasons for the extra tests are fully explained.
You will have the same consultant all the way through your stay. He or she will meet you at your outpatient visit, and will also see you when you are in hospital, and perform the operation. Your consultant will continue to look after you until you return home from hospital, and will also see you for four or five appointments as part of your aftercare. Read more...
Gastric banding and gastric bypass surgery in the UK
Both gastric banding and gastric bypass can be performed in most cases by keyhole surgical methods. The amount of weight loss after surgery depends on both the type of operation and the programme agreed between you and your specialist. The amount of weight you want to lose is just one of the many factors that make up the decision about which operation is right for you.
Gastric banding
The operation involves placing a silicone band around the top part of the stomach, which creates a small pouch that controls the amount of food that can enter your stomach. Patients with gastric bands feel full after eating a smaller amount of food than would have previously been the case. The rate at which the food passes through the band into the stomach is determined by the inner diameter of the gastric bands. The more the band is inflated the narrower the exit of the pouch becomes and the slower it empties. Over time the decreased food intake makes you lose weight. Patients usually spend just one night in hospital and return to work in a couple of weeks.
Gastric bands help to re-educate your eating habits. It is not a magic cure but a tool to help you lose the weight by yourself. If you work with the band you will lose weight. If you eat too much you will simply regurgitate. You will need to work out for yourself what your limits are and always remember to avoid soft or liquid calories and eat your meals slowly.

Gastric bypass
If a greater amount of weight loss is desired, and you are suitable to accept the higher degree of risk involved in this surgery, a gastric bypass may be the preferred option.
The gastric bypass involves separating the stomach pouch from the rest of the stomach, which is then joined to part of the small bowel to allow the stomach to empty directly into the pouch. As the stomach and much of the small bowel is bypassed, less food is absorbed.
Gastric bypass operations are usually performed using keyhole surgery but sometimes it is necessary to perform a standard operation instead. A gastric bypass is a more major operation and you can expect to stay in hospital two nights and be off work for around four weeks afterwards. Careful monitoring of your condition is required on a permanent basis.
