The vast majority of patients undergoing laser eye surgery worldwide are suitable for LASIK. Approximately 5% of patients have LASEK or PRK. The main consideration when recommending LASEK or PRK over LASIK is corneal thickness.

Secondary considerations include the patient’s pre-operative prescription. Since the development of the femtosecond laser, surgeons are now able to create thinner corneal flaps during a LASIK procedure. The surgeon has more corneal tissue beneath the flap to extend the range of correction.
