Total knee replacement surgery

A successful knee replacement operation will help a patient to walk more easily and create less pain when doing so. A knee replacement is most often needed due to severe wear and tear from osteoarthritis or from inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis which can also cause severe damage to the joint.

Surgery involves removal of the damaged joint and replacing it with an artificial knee joint made from either metal or plastic. The knee replacement is fixed to the bone using acrylic cement and the skin is stitched up.

Arthroscopy of the knee

An arthroscopy is used to treat a number of knee problems such as a cartilage tear or damage to ligaments. A small camera is inserted through small incisions into the knee which is used to diagnose the problem. Surgery can also be performed without making any further incision to the knee.

The knee will also be examined for damage to the ligaments, cartilage or joint surfaces. Any loose bodies or torn cartilage will be removed in the procedure.

ACL reconstruction

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most important ligaments in stabilising the knee joint. If this ligament becomes damaged the knee can give way when stressed with twisting movements.

Good mobility can be once again achieved with exercises and physiotherapy however if the knee continues to give way under turning movements an ACL reconstruction may be required.

The procedure is concerned with removing the damaged part of the ligament and replaced with a ligament from another part of the body. The replacement ligament is fixated to the bone via special screws drilled into the bone.
