Total knee replacement (unicompartmental) surgery
Knee replacement surgery can be performed under a variety of anaesthetic techniques including general and local anaesthetic. The operation usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half. Your surgeon will make a cut on the front of your knee and remove the damaged surfaces. They will replace these with an artificial knee joint made of metal, plastic, ceramic, or a combination of these materials. An acrylic cement or special coatings on the knee replacement bond it directly to the bone. Read more about knee replacement surgery.
Recovering after knee replacement surgery
You should be able to go home after four to seven days, and will need crutches or walking sticks for a few weeks. Regular exercise should help you to return to normal activities as soon as possible. Before you start exercising, you should ask a member of the BMI healthcare team or your GP for advice. Kneeling down is not recommended and is usually uncomfortable. Most people make a good recovery, have less pain and can move about better. However, an artificial knee never feels quite the same as a normal knee and a knee replacement can wear out with time. Knee surgery for ACL reconstruction
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the important ligaments that stabilise your knee joint. If you have torn (ruptured) this ligament, the knee can collapse or ‘give way’ when making twisting or turning movements. An ACL rupture happens as a result of a twisting injury to the knee. Successful ACL reconstruction will mean, your knee should not give way any more and, it will allow you to be more active and return to some or all of your sporting activities.
Your surgeon will replace the ACL with a piece of suitable tissue (a graft) from elsewhere in the body. The top and bottom ends of the replacement ligament are fixed with special screws or anchors into ‘tunnels’ drilled in the bone. Read more about ACL reconstruction.
Recovering after ACL reconstruction surgery
You should be able to go home the same day or the day after and you may need to wear a knee brace for a few weeks after the operation.
Once your knee is settling down you will need to start intensive physiotherapy treatment which may continue for as long as six months. Regular exercise should help you to return to normal activities as soon as possible. Before you start exercising, you should ask a member of the healthcare team or your GP for advice. It is unlikely that your knee will ever be quite as good as it was before the original injury. Read more about recovering after ACL reconstruction.
