If you are in need of a hip replacement, the hip surgeons and specialists at Nuffield Health will decide what treatment is appropriate for you based on the severity of your symptoms. As there are several types of hip replacement techniques, your specialist will decide which is best for you depending on your age, level of activity and expectations. The operation is highly successful in reducing pain and immobility caused by worn or damaged hip joints.
Do I need a hip replacement?
Over time, the surfaces on the hip joint can start to wear. This can be caused by osteoarthritis or a previous injury to the hip. Simple, everyday things, like going for a walk or even getting dressed become difficult. There’s no cure for osteoarthritis and it can get worse with time. However, joints can be replaced successfully, improving mobility and reducing pain. Read more about hip replacment surgery at Nuffield Health.

Hip replacement and hip resurfacing at Nuffield Health hospitals
Hip replacement
In general, during a hip replacement operation, the surgeon removes parts of the bones that make up your hip and replaces them with artificial parts made of metal, plastic or ceramic, and sometimes a combination of these. The operation can last up to two hours and usually involves either a general anaesthetic or an injection into your spine to numb the lower part of your body.
You will probably stay in hospital for approximately five to seven days depending on the progress you are making. During this time a physiotherapist will start helping you exercise to ensure you regain movement and walk again as soon as possible. You will also be advised how to look after your new hip. Hip resurfacing
Unlike the traditional hip replacement operation which involves an incision into the thigh to insert an implant comprising of a plastic cup and metal stem, hip resurfacing works by surgeons removing the diseased cartilage from the joint and replacing it with a new lining, comprising of a metal head and cup-like implant which prevents the bones from rubbing painfully against one another. In effect, they resurface the bones in the joint rather than replacing them. Read more about hip resurfacing at Nuffield Health.
Alternative hip surgery treatments
Pain medication, such as anti-inflammatories, can help you to move around. Exercise can help reduce stiffness in your joint, and you may find it easier to get around with the help of a walking stick. A steroid injection into your hip joint will reduce the pain and stiffness for a few months, although this is not a long term treatment. Read more about alternative hip surgery treatments.
