Bone densitometry
Osteoporosis is a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break.
A bone density scan can be used to assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures but can also track the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.
Bone density scanning, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss and is most often performed on the lower spine and hips. Portable devices, including some that use ultrasound to measure the wrist, fingers or heel and are often used for screening purposes.
You will need a Doctors referral to have a Bone Densitometry test or it can be part of your Health Screen.
