Bupa Cromwell Hospital: Gynaecology and Women's Health Centre in London

Bupa Cromwell Hospital

Bupa Cromwell Hospital offers a full range of gynaecological services including “well woman” screening. Many women are part of a “well woman” program which is usually undertaken on a yearly basis. The program includes a cervical smear and pelvic examination to check for diseases of the ovaries and breast examination. Additional tests are undertaken as necessary.

The speciality of Gynaecology is divided into several sub-specialties dealing with a range of disease specific to women:

  • Paediatric and adolescent gynaecology

  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility - for medical and surgical evaluation of women with problems related to the menstrual cycle and fertility. For example, heavy and/or painful periods, endometriosis, pre-menstrual syndrome and difficulty becoming pregnant.  Please note that although the team includes many Gynaecologists specialising in infertility, Bupa Cromwell Hospital does not offer IVF treatment.

  • Gynaecological Oncology - focusing on the medical and surgical treatment of women with cancers of the reproductive organs

  • Urogynaecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery - focusing on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of women with urinary incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs

  • Family Planning

  • Menopausal Gynaecology-focusing on menopause and hormone replacement

Gynaecologists also deal with abnormal smears and undertake a procedure called colposcopy to treat these.

In the past many women were offered a hysterectomy to deal with a number of gynaecological problems. Modern gynaecology has focused on developing treatments which try to avoid hysterectomy and other major operations. These surgical treatments are called “minimal access” or “key-hole” surgery procedures which, whilst treating the condition, reduce the need for long hospital stays and recovery.

Bone densitometry

Osteoporosis is a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men.  Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break.

A bone density scan can be used to assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures but can also track the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.

Bone density scanning, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss and is most often performed on the lower spine and hips.  Portable devices, including some that use ultrasound to measure the wrist, fingers or heel and are often used for screening purposes.

You will need a Doctors referral to have a Bone Densitometry test or it can be part of your Health Screen

Mammography

Mammography remains the best method of early breast cancer detection. Bupa Cromwell Hospital is proud to offer state of the art Digital Mammography which increases patient comfort as the time it takes to x-ray is reduced from conventional methods. The new system emits lower radiation exposure than conventional machines and also reduces the number of false positives in breast cancer detection by using CAD (Computer Aided Detection) giving more peace of mind to the patient.

Bupa Cromwell Hospital’s Diagnostic Centre is also Bupa Accredited.

You will need a Doctors referral to have a Mammogram or it can be part of your Health Screen.
