The London Foot and Ankle Centre treatment

Where can I get foot and ankle treatment with the LFAC?

A nationally recognised centre of excellence, the LFAC provides services at:

The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth

Situated in St John’s Wood, to the north of Central London, St John and St Elizabeth is one of the most respected independent private hospitals in the UK.

London Bridge Hospital

Located on the South Bank of the River Thames, London Bridge Hospital is part of the HCA group and provides some of the most up-to-date hospital facilities in the UK.

Foot and ankle problems

During the average lifetime our feet will cover a distance equivalent to walking four times around the world. So it's not surprising that 75 per cent of people will experience foot or ankle problems at some stage during their lives.

The LFAC guide to foot and ankle conditions covers the most common problems. It is not diagnostic, but has been developed to help patients make an informed decision about their treatment.

The London Foot and Ankle Centre offers multi-disciplinary care and can provide all appropriate forms of diagnosis and treatment, including physiotherapy and podiatry as well as surgery.

Treatments available at the London Foot and Ankle Centre

The foot and ankle is a highly complex and intricate structure, with 28 different bones in the foot alone. Foot and ankle surgery has developed as a specialist form of surgery in order to meet the challenges of this field of orthopaedics and to achieve the best results for patients.

Ankle replacement

Ankle replacement, known as prosthesis, is a major procedure most commonly performed for patients with advanced ankle osteoarthritis. The aim of an ankle replacement is to eradicate persistent pain and preserve ankle mobility.

Arthroscopy

Originally developed for knee surgery, arthroscopy (or keyhole surgery) is an invaluable tool in the treatment of the foot and ankle. The joint is visualised using a tiny fibre optic camera inserted through very small incisions called portals. The surgeon can then see the joint on a high definition screen in theatre, and operate using specialised miniature instruments.

Fusion

The surgical fusion, or joining together, of joints is a long established surgical procedure. It is very effective at eliminating persistent pain and is highly durable. There is however some loss of mobility and fusion is only considered for patients who have tried, or would not benefit from, more conservative treatments.

Tendon transfer

A tendon transfer is a procedure where a healthy tendon is taken and moved to replace the function of a diseased or inactive tendon. A tendon transfer restores the movement or action to a previously paralysed or diseased muscle and joint.

Minimally invasive bunion surgery

The London Foot and Ankle Centre is the first in the capital to introduce a new form of minimally invasive bunion surgery. The operation appears to have many benefits for patients compared with traditional open surgery and is based on using incisions which are smaller than the diameter of a thin pencil.

Podiatry

Podiatrists at the London Foot and Ankle Centre work in partnership with the team of consultant orthopaedic surgeons to ensure each patient is thoroughly assessed, diagnosed and optimum treatment is selected.
