What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony prominence on the inner aspect of the base of the big toe and is extremely common in the UK. Bunions normally coexist with hallux valgus - a condition characterised by the big toe drifting off towards the second toe. However, the terms hallux valgus and bunion are usually used interchangeably.

As a result the big toe starts to crowd the smaller toes. It makes the foot wider which causes footwear fitting difficulties and can also lead to a painful big toe joint and painful calluses. Because the big toe’s joint does not bear weight normally it can also cause pain under the second knuckle joint which can feel like you’re walking on a marble.

How can bunions be treated?

There are different types of bunion surgery dependent on your symptoms and diagnosis. In general, the bony lump on the side of the big toe knuckle is removed, and your toe may be set straight with a pin. Sometimes the ligaments and tendons are also repositioned in order to straighten the big toe.

What are the alternatives to bunion surgery?

You may be able to manage your symptoms by altering activity levels and/or changing your footwear (possibly with a foot support). Please note: the use of insoles / orthotics will not correct your bunion.

When can I return to work after bunion surgery?

Any operation on bone has a relatively long recovery period, which can take between four and six weeks, partially dependant on how well you follow the aftercare advice, your age and the severity of the bunion. It is important to keep your foot rested and elevated as much as possible so your return to work date will partially depend on your type of work.
