Ankle arthroscopy surgery
Suffering from a torn cartilage, ligament damage or arthritis?
Ankle arthroscopy surgery allows your surgeon to diagnose and treat common ankle problems such as these without needing to make a large cut in the skin. Your surgeon will be able to see inside your ankle using a camera inserted through small cuts in the skin, and be able to treat some of these problems using special surgical instruments. The operation usually takes around 30-45 minutes under anaesthetic.
Ankle arthroscopy surgery is available at 53 BMI Healthcare hospitals. Find your nearest hospital which offers ankle arthroscopy surgery.
Recovering after an ankle arthroscopy
You should be able to go home on the same day as the operation and it is common for the ankle to feel slightly swollen for a few weeks after surgery. Walking can be uncomfortable and you may have to use crutches. You may need physiotherapy to help you regain your muscle strength.
Ankle replacement surgery in the UK
You may be considering an ankle replacement because you are suffering from arthritis of the ankle. Arthritis is a group of conditions that causes damage to one or more joints. In the operation the surgeon will make a cut on the front of your ankle, remove the damaged surfaces, and replace these with an artificial ankle joint made of metal, plastic, ceramic, or a combination of these. The ankle replacement is then fixed to the bone with a special coating and your surgeon will close the skin with stitches or clips.
Ankle replacement surgery is available at 52 BMI Healthcare hospitals. Find your nearest hospital which offers ankle replacement surgery.
Recovering after an ankle replacement
You should be able to go home five to seven days after the operation. You will be given exercises to do at home, which should help you to return to normal activities as soon as possible. Most people make a good recovery, however, an artificial ankle never feels quite the same as a normal ankle and the replacement can wear out with time. You will usually have an x-ray of your ankle at least every five years to check the position of your ankle replacement.
Bunion surgery in the UK
A bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. The most common cause of bunions is footwear that does not have enough width to fit the toes in their natural position. The operation usually takes between half an hour and an hour. It may involve removing the bunion, releasing or tightening ligaments, cutting and realigning the bones of your big toe and straightening one or more of your smaller toes.
Bunion surgery is available at 54 BMI Healthcare hospitals. Find your nearest hospital which offers bunion surgery.
Recovering after bunion surgery
You should be able to go home the same day or the day after, and for the first week, you will need to spend most of the time with your leg raised up so that the swelling settles. Regular exercise should help you to return to normal activities as soon as possible.
Foot surgery for other toe problems
The three main problems that can happen are deformity, pain in the toe joints and metatarsalgia. Toe deformities such as claw toe and hammer toe happen when the tendons that move the toes get too tight or out of balance. The affected toe can rub on other toes and on the inside of your shoe, causing pressure and pain. Inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis can damage the toe joints and this may make them come out of position (dislocate). After surgery your toes should be straighter, so your foot should fit more comfortably in a normal shoe. Read more about foot surgery for other toe problems.
