Dr Thomas Crisp, TD, BSc, MB, BS, Dip. Sports Med. FFSEM(UK), is a sports injury specialist who started off as a GP in Chelmsford where he opened a sports injury clinic in the local physiotherapy department in 1983 but then trained in sports and exercise medicine and has practiced full-time in this area since 1990. He has travelled with many teams, including GB Olympic and GB Para Olympic teams, University games, London Division rugby and Essex cricket.
He has taught sports injury management to doctors and physiotherapists at Queen Mary College where he is a senior lecturer, and non-medics at University of Essex and University of East London. He was the second doctor to be placed on the special register with the GMC in 2008 and is now a member of the council of Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine setting standards in the field.
Dr Crisp has acted as medical advisor to a chain on health clubs and companies marketing exercise equipment, and has appeared on radio and television as an expert on a number of fields.
He works in clinics at not only Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford but also Rivers Hospital in Sawbridgeworth, London Independent Hospital in East London and Bupa Health & Wellbeing in the City and Canary Wharf. He has immense experience of treating all soft tissue injuries, whether sport related or not. He is used to making difficult diagnoses, and co-ordinating treatment with other clinicians. He often uses injections when necessary, and has pioneered several ground-breaking new treatments, especially those for Achilles and patellar tendons (where the results of this treatment have been published in scientific journals and are extremely successful) and shin splints.
He diagnoses and treats many over-use injuries, including those that are running related. He is expert at diagnosing knee and ankle injuries arising from sport and in everyday life. Dr Crisp is actively involved in the academic department of Sports Medicine at Queen Mary Hospital University of London where research is carried out regularly. Recently, he has published Achilles and patellar research as well as a study of injection therapy for resistant shin splints. He has written chapters for several medical text books on various aspects of sports medicine, including team care. He has trialled the use of sclerosants (prolotherapy) in the knee and hamstrings.

Dr Crisp qualified at Royal London Hospital in 1973 having first obtained a BSc in Physiology. After training in a number of areas, he entered General Practice in 1980.
He gained a Diploma in Sports Medicine with Merit in 1986, and was made a Founder Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine of Ireland (FFSEM RCSI) in 2002 and Founder Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine of UK in 2006 (FFSEM(UK)).
He was entered on GMC Specialist Register of Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2008.
