Glyn Evans: Consultant Knee Surgeon and Sports Injury Specialist, London

Glyn Evans

Over 50% of Glyn’s patients see him with regard to sports related injuries.  His experience, knowledge and proven expertise have helped professional sports people, sports veterans and many other patients overcome a broad range of knee injuries and degenerative conditions.

Glyn qualified in Cardiff and trained in Liverpool, Edinburgh and Nottingham. He was then appointed Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Southampton with a major interest in tibial fractures.

He became an NHS Consultant in 1990 and his NHS Consultancies included St Mary’s Hospital Isle of Wight, the Treloar Hospital Alton and the Royal Hospital Haslar. Since 2004, Glyn has been exclusively treating knees from his clinic in central London

Each year Glyn does over 1,200 outpatient consultations and performs around 300 knee operations including arthroscopies (keyhole operations), ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstructions, partial and total knee replacements and correction of bony deformities (osteotomies).

Glyn’s approach

Glyn is recognised as a leading specialist in knee injuries. As well as being a highly skilled knee surgeon, his success, in part, is due to his friendly and approachable manner. As one of Glyn’s patients, you can expect to be treated as an individual.

Glyn takes a holistic approach that ensures that your knee is never treated in isolation.  Your lifestyle, goals and unique circumstances are all factors that will determine how to successfully treat you; this is particularly relevant to sports related injuries.

People have widely differing requirements from their knees. Professional sportspeople and young, active patients require far greater functionality than less active individuals.  Glyn carries out a rigorous assessment and discusses all the options available before jointly deciding with you the optimal treatment for your particular needs.

London Gait Analysis

Knee gait analysis

As far as we know London Knee Clinic is the only knee clinic in the UK that routinely undertakes gait analysis of the knee. Unlike other techniques, Glyn’s clinic offers patients a dynamic knee assessment using a specialist and unique service that was developed with government funding.

Put simply, four digital recorders are placed at key points to capture detailed information about the three dimensional movements at the knee, thigh and calf.  These digital units record all movements of the knee and are used to produce a graphical representation of knee movement.

This vital data provides a functional assessment which helps determine the nature and severity of the problem. It is also used to follow the progress and outcome of treatment. This system of gait analysis is available in the clinic and is also carried out in the field at sports facilities and football clubs.

Knee treatments available

Glyn’s portfolio of procedures and treatments includes:

Sports injuries – after a full assessment including consultation, gait analysis, X-rays and MRI scans, treatments include physiotherapy, injections and if necessary surgical procedures.

Knee arthroscopykeyhole surgery via 5mm incisions.  The interior of the knee is viewed on a TV monitor during the course of the operation.  Most cases are able to go home on the day of surgery without the need for crutches or a support and return to exercise within a few days.

Joint resurfacing surgery – with a focus on partial knee replacements and on resurfacing the kneecap and the front of the femur where the kneecap runs.

Patello-femoral resurfacing – resurfaces the deep surface of the knee-cap and the front of the femur or thigh bone where the knee-cap runs.

Anterior cruciate repair – a keyhole repair procedure which uses part of your natural hamstring tendons to replace the damaged anterior cruciate ligament.

Autologous chondrocyte (cartilage cell) implantation – a procedure to replace lost articular cartilage with implanted laboratory grown cartilage.

Meniscal trimming & repair – the menisci are a C shaped part of the knee commonly torn by sportsmen including footballers and skiers.
