Psychiatry deals with the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of the mind and mental illness.

A psychiatrist specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. It takes many years of education and training to become a psychiatrist: He or she must graduate from college and then medical school, and complete six years of training in the field of psychiatry.

Many psychiatrists undergo additional training so that they can further specialise in such areas as child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatry of the elderly, forensic psychiatry, psychopharmacology, addiction psychiatry, neuropsychiatry or psychotherapy.

The professional body in the UK which is responsible for training and regulating medical practitioners who specialise in psychiatry is the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
