Mr Hariharan is an
internationally recognised Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Newport and Cardiff in Wales, specialising
in the treatment of pathological conditions of the foot and ankle such as bunions, arthritis of the ankle, big toe, complex foot deformity, fractures of
the foot and ankle, sports injuries of the foot and ankle, joint replacement of
the foot and the ankle, key hole surgery (arthroscopy) of the foot and ankle,
ankle soft tissue injuries amongst others.
Mr Hariharan is well known for his expertise
with sports injuries of the foot and ankle, diabetic and rheumatoid foot
disorders and sees patients from many parts of the world and is actively
involved in the treatment of professional and elite athletes in the country.
Mr.Hariharan (or Hari as he is often referred to by his patients!)
did his undergraduate medical training at the prestigious Madras
Medical College
and his orthopaedic training in Wales.
He then completed an observer fellowship in foot and ankle surgery visiting
many parts of the United
States.
Hari sees patients
from many parts of the United Kingdom and other countries and has a large
tertiary referral practice both on the NHS and in his private practice for
complex foot and ankle problems, failed foot and ankle surgical patients and
those who want a second opinion on their foot and ankle problems. He is the
honorary foot and ankle surgeon for the Newport
Gwent Dragons. He also consults/operates on professionals in rugby, football,
cricket, athletics, racket sports, and professional dancers from many parts of
the country. He is the honorary medical director for Newport
County Football Club, and the Newport Cricket Club.
Hari been a consultant from 1994 and is based at the Royal
Gwent Hospital Newport South Wales, a sub regional specialist Centre, and has recently established the Foot and Ankle
Centre at the state of the art Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital with his colleagues.
This unit enjoys easy road access, excellent facilities and has the latest
state of the art foot and ankle technology to complement an exciting team
offering foot and ankle surgery to the entire county.
His private patients are seen and operated on at St.Joseph’s
Private Hospital
in Newport. He
also has private clinics at the Cyncoed Consulting Rooms and operates at the Spire Hospital
in Cardiff.
Hari is the current president (2011-12) of the British Orthopaedic Foot and
Ankle Society (BOFAS) one of the largest orthopaedic subspecialist societies
representing foot and ankle surgeons in the entire country. He is a member of
the Wales Orthopaedic Surgical training programme and a clinical teacher at The
University of Wales, College of Medicine. He is a visiting lecturer
at Glasgow
University and is a national teacher for the British
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He is also a visiting member of
faculty for the University
of Dundee on their Mch (Orth)
programme. He has been a specialist adviser for MTP joint replacement with The National
Institute for Clinical Excellence.

Research interests
Mr Hariharan has extensive research interests with a large portfolio of presentations to distinguished foot and ankle audiences. His main research interests are foot biomechanics, arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery and foot and ankle trauma. He has spoken at numerous international conferences and is an invited speaker to many national and international centres for the last 15 years. He has pioneered many techniques and has brought many ‘firsts’ in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery to Wales.
