Mr Andrew Cole, BSc (Hons) Physiology and Pathology, MB.BS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Tr and Orth) is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and is a specialist shoulder surgeon.
Mr Cole runs his private orthopaedic clinic at the Spire Hospital, Southampton, and The Nuffield Hampshire Hospital. He is a shoulder specialist and is an expert in open shoulder surgery and the newer techniques of arthroscopic surgery.
Andrew Cole studied medicine at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School ( now part of Imperial College) at the University of London. He qualified with a BSc (Hons) in 1987 and as a Doctor in 1990. After a period in London including Demonstrating anatomy at Queen Mary and Westfield College, Mr Cole underwent his basic surgical training in Bristol and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng) in 1994.
Mr. Cole continued his orthopaedic training in Oxford, gaining experience at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, an internationally acclaimed Institution for specialist orthopaedic surgery and also gained extensive trauma experience at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. During his training Mr. Cole developed an interest in shoulder and trauma surgery. He undertook specialist fellowships in shoulder surgery in Oxford and trauma surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada.
Mr. Cole took up his Consultant post at Southampton in 2001 as a specialist shoulder surgeon and has developed and expanded the service since then.
He was awarded the prestigious European travelling fellowship from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society in 2001.

Education and training
Since his appointment, Mr Cole has maintained a significant interest in the education and training of future doctors. He is Deputy Programme Director of the Regional Orthopaedic Training Programme for Wessex and has been elected Regional Specialty Advisor in Orthopaedic Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng). He is on the teaching faculty for the AO foundation and is on the UK education committee for the OTC (Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation). Mr Cole is an active participant as faculty member of a number of national and international courses on all aspects of shoulder surgery. He has been invited to examine for the FRCS (tr and Orth) exam for the Royal College Of Surgeons.
Publications
Mr Cole has previously published research in international journals covering aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery and trauma. He has written chapters in the Oxford Textbook of Orthopaedic Surgery and Medicolegal Reporting. Mr Cole currently reviews shoulder papers for the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Mr Cole keeps a comprehensive data base of all patients and operations along with pre-operative subjective scores and follow up scores. Success rates of operations and the number of procedures performed can be discussed with Mr Cole in clinic. He performs 300-350 shoulder procedures annually.
