Oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the UK

Oral surgery is a procedure that may be used to remove wisdom teeth and impacted teeth, insert dental implants, correct and repair jaw, facial and craniofacial deformities like cleft lip and cleft palate, apply orthodontic techniques and treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, snoring and sleep apnoea.

Oral surgeons require a training pathway of at least 5 years post graduation after a formal qualification in dentistry. Specialists hold higher qualifications and have a wide range of experience. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons have both medical and dental qualifications.

The British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) represent all dental surgeons with a special interest in oral surgery and surgical dentistry.
