Mr Brian Little, BSc MA DO FHEA FRCS FRCOphth, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, specialises in cataract surgery and the treatment of glaucoma.

  

He has a longstanding interest and expertise in the development and refinement of new surgical techniques. As a result, he is able to offer patients the benefits of his experience and the most up to date procedures.

 

He sees private patients at the London Medical Clinic, 49 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 5HJ, and operates at King Edward VII’s Hospital (Sister Agnes), Beaumont Street, London W1G 6AA.

 

About Brian Little

Mr Little trained as an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and was appointed Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to the Royal Free Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at London University in 1993. In 2009 he returned to Moorfields as a Consultant and as Training Director of the Cataract Service.

He is internationally recognised as a leading cataract surgeon, specialising in small-incision surgery with a particular interest in more complex and challenging cases. The great majority of his surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, so that most patients are able to leave hospital on the same day. The lenses that he uses to replace the cataracts are tailored to suit each patient. Recently, multifocal lens implants have become available, that give patients back both near and distant vision, and he is accredited to provide these.

His global contributions to the development of cataract surgery have been acknowledged through his appointment in 2008 as the sole International member of the Cataract Clinical Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.  He has also been elected to the prestigious International Intraocular Implant Club, which has only 250 invited members globally. It was founded in1966 by the late Sir Harold Ridley (inventor of the intraocular lens implant) in order to provide “a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge between master surgeons and industry leaders from around the globe dedicated to the art and science of lens implantation”.

 

For many years he has been involved in the invention and modification of ophthalmic microsurgical instruments that are in use in the UK and abroad. He is the Principal UK Expert on the International Working Group on Standards for Ophthalmic Surgical Equipment.

He has always been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training, in which he has extensive experience. He contributes to the organisation and delivery of many surgical training programmes in the UK, Europe and USA and is a regularly invited guest lecturer at international meetings.

 

His award winning Video Atlas of Eye Surgery has been recently released to high international acclaim. The atlas is a collaborative venture involving ophthalmologists from the UK, Europe and the USA. Its purpose is to provide a high quality video-based structured training programme in Eye Surgery. His instructional videos have won numerous awards at major scientific meetings, most recently as the “Best of Show” award at the 2008 American Academy of Ophthalmology.

   

He is a member of the Information Technology Committee, the Microsurgical Training Sub-Committee and E-learning Sub-Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and served on the Council of the UK & Ireland Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS).

   

Since 1996 he has been a member of the Volunteer Faculty of ORBIS, the international eye charity that has, as its flagship, the DC10 "Flying Eye Hospital". Through this work he trains doctors and nurses in developing countries. He has undertaken programs in Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines, Jamaica and Ethiopia. He is also one of the three ORBIS UK ambassadors, and works, in this capacity, to promote ORBIS both in the UK and abroad.
