PRURITUS ANI

What is Pruritus Ani ?

The anus is situated between the buttocks and it is through the anus that bowel motions pass. The skin around the anus is normally pressed close together and subject to friction. Naturally it becomes warm and humid. It is also an area that is difficult to clean. Pruritis Ani is the name given to recurrent episodes of itching and irritation around the anus.

How does Pruritus Ani occur ?

For most people the cause is unknown. In some instances however, the cause relates to infection, skin diseases and conditions such as haemorrhoids [piles] which may affect the peri-anal area. Whilst poor local hygiene can cause pruritis ani, it is also possible to develop the condition in response to over meticulous cleaning of the area.

Why does Pruritus Ani occur ?

Unless a specific cause can be identified it is unclear why it develops. Men are affected more often than women.

Treatment Involved for Pruritus Ani

The doctor will usually wish to examine the back passage as well as a general examination. Blood tests may be performed to look for some of the recognised causes. If a specific condition is present, it will be treated appropriately. Otherwise, the following general principles are often suggested. The area should be kept clean by washing after every bowel action. Medicated wipes are useful. The area should be gently dried by dabbing with a towel. Simple, non-medicated talc should be applied afterwards. Avoid ointments or creams, unless prescribed.

If Pruritus Ani is Left Untreated

The anus and surrounding skin may become inflamed and possibly infected.
