PITYRIASIS ROSEAWhat is Pityriasis Rosea ?Pityriasis rosea is a skin condition which can occur at any age. The eruption starts as a single area called the herald patch. This is a patch of skin of variable size which is red and has a slightly scaly border. It can occur anywhere. Seven to ten days after the appearance of this spot, a generalized rash develops affecting the trunk, arms and legs. This consists of small patches of red skin with a scaly border. The rash starts on the trunk and spreads to the arms and legs. After about 6 weeks it disappears of its own accord. Occasionally the eruption itches. How does Pityriasis Rosea occur ?Pityriasis rosea tends to occur in small epidemics within the community. There is usually no history of contact with somebody else with the condition. Recent studies suggest that the Human Herpes virus type 8 is the cause of pityriasis rosea. Why does Pityriasis Rosea occur ?Recent studies suggest that the Human Herpes virus type 8 is the cause of pityriasis rosea. It appears that the genetic make up of the individual dictates whether infection with the virus will lead to pityriasis rosea or not. Treatment Involved for Pityriasis RoseaOnce a diagnosis has been made, no specific treatment is needed. You may experience itching of the skin. If this becomes troublesome, a mild steroid (cortisone-like) cream, such as 1% hydrocortisone can help to relieve the symptoms, and this can be obtained by prescription from your doctor. Most people have no symptoms and therefore need no treatment. If Pityriasis Rosea is Left UntreatedThe condition would get better just as quickly. Only the itching is helped by treatment. Effects on Family of Pityriasis RoseaPityriasis rosea is not an infectious disorder. There is no risk to family and friends. |
