NAPPY RASH

What is Nappy Rash ?

This is a condition where the skin becomes red and sore in the area under the nappy. The problem may be all over, or in patches. The skin may be cracked or broken. Nappy rash is not dangerous but it can be very uncomfortable.

How does Nappy Rash occur ?

When the nappy is wet the skin is in contact with urine. Urine can irritate the skin. Some germs naturally live on the skin in this area. A warm and wet nappy is the ideal place for these to multiply, causing infections. The infection may be a yeast (called thrush or candida) or a bacteria.

Why does Nappy Rash occur ?

Nappy rash is very common. It is more likely if nappies are not changed very often or the skin is not cleaned well when the nappy is changed. Some children get it more easily, such as babies with eczema or a sensitive skin.

Treatment Involved for Nappy Rash

Change nappies often and do not allow the baby to stay in a wet nappy. If you use towelling nappies, use a liner. Clean the nappy area carefully when changing. Apply a barrier cream each time you change, which will protect the skin from irritant urine. Your health visitor should be able to suggest a barrier cream. If it is possible allow the baby to go without a nappy for a short time each day, so that the area can dry. If the problem does not go away with simple measures, consult your health visitor or doctor. If the area has become infected with a bacteria or thrush they will recommend a cream to clear this. A cream containing hydrocortisone may help if the rash shows some features of eczema.

During Treatment for Nappy Rash

If the rash starts to spread outside the nappy area, or is very cracked and weeping consult the doctor.

If Nappy Rash is Left Untreated

Nappy rash can be very miserable and uncomfortable for the baby. Most cases would get better eventually. Rarely an infection spreads from the nappy area and the child becomes unwell. This might need treatment in hospital.

Effects on Family of Nappy Rash

Most babies have nappy rash at some time, so do not feel guilty if your baby has it. Make sure that everyone who cares for the baby follows the advice on prevention.
