IMPETIGOWhat is Impetigo ?Impetigo is a skin infection which can occur anywhere on the body. It is commonest on the face and upper limbs. It may begin with a blister which bursts, then crusts or scabs over. Weeping of the rash is very common. Impetigo is infectious and can spread over the skin rapidly and also spread to other people. How does Impetigo occur ?The skin is usually a barrier to infection. Germs are always present on the skin. They can cause an infection if the skin is cut or scratched, or a condition like eczema can make it more likely to become infected. Impetigo is caused by germs (bacteria) most often ones called streptococcus or staphylococcus . A child can spread the infection across the skin by scratching or rubbing the area. Why does Impetigo occur ?It is not a sign of being dirty or having poor hygiene. The bacteria are not removed from the skin by washing and many people have them on their skin all the time. Children with eczema are more likely to get impetigo. The infection can easily be passed between children, for example in a nursery. Treatment Involved for ImpetigoA child with impetigo will need antibiotics, usually given by mouth. The course of treatment should be completed. Do not stop just because there is improvement in the infection. During Treatment for ImpetigoGo back to the doctor if the rash does not improve or the impetigo continues to spread. This condition is very easy to pass on to other children. If a child has impetigo he or she should be kept away from school or nursery and other children until the spots have disappeared. For similar reasons, take precautions within the family to avoid infecting other members of the family. Use separate towels and avoid the children sharing beds, clothing or baths until the child is better. If the child gets a reaction to the antibiotics, he should be brought back to the doctor. This is most likely to be diarrhoea or an itchy rash. After Treatment for ImpetigoThe treatment for impetigo is usually very effective and the condition should go away completely. If there is a recurrence, consult the doctor. Some children are left with a mark on the skin after the infection. This will gradually fade. If Impetigo is Left UntreatedUntreated, the condition can spread to involve a much larger area of skin surface and the child would become unwell. Effects on Family of ImpetigoImpetigo is very infectious and children and adults should avoid touching the infected spots. This can be very difficult if there are young children and unfortunately sometimes several members of the family catch impetigo. Related LinksClick on link below |
