Out and about

Although we’re more likely to have an accident in the home, remember we’re also at risk when we’re out and about.

Buses

  • Buses can be very bumpy. Stay seated as much as you can and hold on to a solid surface when waiting to get off.

  • Don’t cross the road in front of the bus.

  • Wait until the bus moves off before crossing the road.

Train Platforms

  • Train platforms are dangerous places.

  • It’s advisable to stand back from the platform edge when waiting for a train.

  • When getting off a train, keep away from doors and windows until it has completely stopped at a station.

  • Never rollerblade or skateboard on platforms.

Sun

  • Remember children’s – and particularly babies’ – skins are more sensitive than adults and burn easily.

  • Babies under six months should be kept out of the sun.

  • Keep babies over six months out of the sun between 11 in the morning and three in the afternoon.

  • Dress children in loose clothing and a hat that covers the back of the neck. Use a sun cream suitable for a baby.

Alcohol-related accidents

  • Avoid swimming when you’ve been drinking alcohol.

  • Never drink and drive.

Risks to children

  • Children may be reluctant to tell you where they’re going but always ask them who they’ll be with.

  • Make sure your child always carries contact numbers and spare change or a phone card for the phone.

  • Make sure your child knows what to do in an emergency.

  • When they’re old enough, encourage your children to learn basic first aid.
