This is a national service incorporating the original helpline pioneered at the Alder Centre at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool in 1989 and the one set up at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1992. Staffed every evening from 7-10pm and Wednesdays from 10am-1pm, it provides support and counselling for anyone affected by the death of a child (from any cause), including families, friends and healthcare professionals. Set up 1990 as an umbrella organisation for charities with an interest in promoting organ donation. Declared objects include promoting a wider appreciation of the needs of patients on transplant waiting lists and helping to improve the supply of donor organs. Organises various activities, including the annual National Transplant Week.

Pioneered late 1994 to offer support to patients and carers, especially those new to the scene. Hopes to develop in a number of areas, including information, counselling, referral etc.

UKTSSA became a Special Health Authority of the NHS in 1991 but its forerunner was originally set up in 1972. Today it offers a range of facilities which includes: a 24-hour organ matching and allocation service; a comprehensive database of potential recipients and transplant outcomes; and the national tissue-typing reference laboratory and serum bank. UKTSSA also maintains the NHS Organ Donor Register on behalf of the Department of Health.
