The National Organ Donor Register

This register was launched on 6 October 1994 and is a computerised database of potential organ donors ie people who wish to donate their organs to help someone else when they die. It is accessible to Transplant Co-ordinators only through Duty Staff at the UKTSSA on a 24 hour basis.

  • There were 3,000,000 people on the Register (July 1996).

  • 4,000,000 people (February 1997)

  • 4,800,000 people on the Register (mid July 1998)

  • and presently over 8,646,000 (February 2000)

To register that you wish to donate your organs and tissues when you die then please phone the following, local call, phone number and ask for an organ donor form (one per person wishing to register).

Anyone of any age may register.

With each form (identification code ODMC1) comes a multi-organ donor card. This was introduced 25 years ago in 1971. Surveys indicate that 30%, of the UK population of 57M people, have a donor card and that 20% carry the card at any one time.

Ideally it should be where people will frequently see it e.g. a wallet or purse.

Equally important tell your family for it is they who will be approached regarding your wishes.

Also tell your friends, it could save valuable time when it matters.
