Migraine clinics

Although most migraine patients can successfully manage their condition with the right help and support at primary care level, the Association has recognised the need for specialist migraine clinics, centres of excellence where migraine sufferers can receive specialist attention from doctors at the leading edge of clinical practice, well versed on the latest research findings and aware of all the available treatment options.

As the line between treatment and research is very fine, good doctors claim to learn something new from every patient, the specialist clinics have also become leading research centres.

The Migraine Action Association opened the very first migraine clinic at Bournemouth in 1963 under Dr. Vera Walker and since then has been instrumental (in some cases the driving force) in the opening of specialist clinics throughout the U.K. It has contributed many thousands of pounds in seed corn grants to get the clinics started, the purchase of specialist equipment and by contributing to running costs, without which some of these clinics would undoubtedly close. Our commitment to clinics in 1999 alone was in excess of £50,000.

Patients must first obtain a letter from their GP before asking for an appointment at any of these hospitals or clinics.
