What the Meningitis Trust can do for you

The National Meningitis Trust was established in 1986 and is a registered charity. It was formed as a direct response to the major outbreak of meningitis that occurred in the Stroud/Stonehouse area of Gloucestershire in the mid 1980's.

Still based at Stroud, the Trust was formed by a group of people from the area who had either been affected personally or had experienced one of the forms of meningitis within their families. Knowledge about the disease at the time was very limited and this contributed to an atmosphere of fear of the disease in this area and beyond.

Since then, the National Meningitis Trust has raised millions of pounds to fund research projects and further develop awareness of meningitis, and provides a wide range of support and assistance to meningitis patients and their families.

Our services have developed over the years, based upon our experiences of working with people who have come to us for help.

We are available to anyone who has been affected by meningitis or would like to know more about the disease.

We can offer a range of services:
24-hour Help Line 0845-6000-800
The 24 hour nurse-led help line 0845 6000 800 is there for those who are in any way concerned, anxious, or distressed about meningitis and meningococcal disease.

Counselling

We recognise the trauma this illness can bring varies from person to person which is why the Trust has established a national Counselling Service to support sufferers and their families directly affected by meningitis.

Financial support grants

We provide discretionary support grants (for UK residents) to enhance the quality of life for those who may have been affected by the disease. Click here to find out more about the service or contact our helpline on 0845-6000-800.

Community help groups

There are many ways in which you can help the Trust and its work. Form or join a Community Help Group, become a Key Supporter or Direct Contact. Many of our volunteers are available for you. They may be able to help you if you have been affected by the disease.

Mobile Information Service

Our Mobile Awareness Vehicle Information Service plays a vital role in providing support and information. It travelled to over 150 locations during the last year, providing information wherever it was requested or urgently required.

Publications and newsletters

We produce a range of publications geared specifically to different audiences - children, mothers, young people, healthcare professionals, teachers, and media e.g. a credit card sized symptoms card, leaflets, fact sheets and regular newsletters.

Our services are available to everyone.
