Why choose organic food

The pros...

There are a number of very good reasons to ‘go organic’:

  • Organic food is free from artificial chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, growth-promoters and
  • fertilisers
  • It’s produced using environmentally friendly methods
  • It’s free from genetically modified ingredients
  • It reduces dependence on non-renewable resources
  • It places emphasis on animal welfare
  • There hasn’t been a recorded case of BSE in any herd of cattle that’s been in full organic management since before 1985
  • Organic food often tastes better than non-organic

Organic foods - some studies show - have more vitamins and beneficial trace elements than conventionally-grown food and so may be more nutritious.

And the cons...

  • Because organic foods are not mass-produced and traditional, organic farming often produces lower yields than modern intensive farming methods, organic food is generally a bit more expensive than non-organic.

  • The fruits and vegetables produced organically sometimes look less appealing than conventional produce that’s been specially bred for the commercial benefits of attractive colour, uniform size and the ability to keep its appearance for longer.
