Rule of thumb nutrition guide

Making sense of the figures provided on food labels can be difficult. Use the following ‘rule of thumb’ nutrition guide to tell whether the food contains a lot or a little of nutrients such as fat, sugar and sodium (salt).

Compare the amounts declared on the nutrition panel with the amounts below. For foods where you eat the whole pack, like a ready meal or sandwich, compare the figure given on the pack for ‘per serving’. For other foods, such as snacks or foods which you eat in relatively small amounts, compare the figure ‘per 100g’.

A lot means these amounts or more:

sugars 10g
fat 20g
saturated fats 5g
fibre 3g
sodium 0.5g

A little means these amounts or less:

sugars 2g
fat 3g
saturated fats 1g
fibre 0.5g
sodium 0.1g

Salt is shown as 'sodium' on nutrition panels. Most of the 'sodium' in food is from common salt, but other additives or ingredients can add to sodium levels, e.g. monosodium glutamate.
