Kitchen hygiene

It’s important to remember a few basic hygiene rules in the kitchen to ensure that you and your family eat safely.

  • Wash hands and dry on a clean towel (not the tea-towel) before handling food. Make sure you also wash your hands after going to the toilet or touching pets, dirty washing or the dustbin.
  • Cover cuts and grazes.
  • Keep all working surfaces and chopping boards scrupulously clean, especially when raw meat or poultry has been prepared. To prevent contamination it’s a good idea to keep a separate chopping board for raw meat.
  • Bleach, disinfect or change kitchen cloths or sponges often
  • Wipe the tops of all cans before opening them.
  • Rinse dishes, cooking pots and utensils after washing up and let them drip dry if possible.
  • Keep pets away from food, dishes and worktops.
  • Keep waste-bins covered and away from food. Clean them regularly with disinfectant.
