Sun protection

It is vital to protect babies and young children from burning to avoid possible skin problems in later life. Babies and young infants have thin, delicate skin that burns more easily.

Babies under six months must be kept in the shade at all times. A baby's head is particularly vulnerable, so a sunshade or canopy should be fitted to the pram and a sun hat worn. Babies also need plenty of fluids in hot weather.

Infants and young children need a high protection sunscreen with an SPF of at least 25.

A waterproof formulation is also recommended as children spend many hours playing at the water's edge. If the child's skin is particularly sensitive, a perfume-free formulation would be of benefit.

Be aware of the dangers of toddlers burning in the park, sitting in the buggy shopping or sight seeing, or simply playing in the back garden. Sunscreens should be worn every day in the summer months. Sun hats and t-shirts are also excellent sun protection, but they need to cover the ears and neck. A "foreign legion" type hat with a flap covering the neck may be particularly helpful.
