Fractures of the cheekbone present with pain in the affected area. The face may look deformed or lopsided. The fracture may involve the floor of the eye socket, the eyeball may be displaced and sink backwards and there may be bleeding in the eye. There may be numbness or tingling over the cheek due to damage to a nerve.
Diagnosis is easily suspected by examining the affected area. X-ray of the area can help identify the site of fracture. Often, a CT scan is required for exact delineation of the fracture site and to assess any other injury to the facial skin or tissues.

Fractures of the cheekbones are caused by trauma usually in a road traffic accident. A blow to the face is also a cause in many cases.

Fractures of the cheekbones cause a discontinuity in the bones and lead to disfigurement of the face. There may be associated injury to the soft tissues and blood vessels which may cause bleeding. There may be scarring of the muscles responsible for eyeball movements leading to double vision or squint. Jaw opening may be restricted or painful.
Fractures of the cheekbone: Treatment
Initial treatment involves control of bleeding and stabilization of the patient’s vital parameters. Administration of intravenous fluids may be needed. If there is no displacement of the fractured bone, no treatment may be required. However, if there is deformity of the face, surgical correction may be needed. This involves incisions inside the mouth or under the lower eyelid and then application of a titanium plate and screws to stabilize the bone.
