Smoking and childhood illnesses

Children who live in a smoky atmosphere are more likely to get:

  • coughs and colds
  • chest infections (temperature with a bad cough)
  • asthma
  • ear infections and glue ear.

Every year 17,000 children are admitted to hospital because their parents smoke.

If you can’t stop smoking or encourage other adults in your house to stop, then try to make sure that your children don’t have to smoke too by creating a smoke-free zone.

We are indebted to Health Promotion England for their help in compiling this section.
