Why do women get breast implants?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the UK, but why do so many women opt for the surgery? It could be due to insecurities, self-confidence, health, or it could be for more superficial reasons. There are many varying reasons why women get breast implants, but usually it is out of medical necessity or the desire to have more confidence in themselves and their bodies.

The Huffington Post looked into the reasons why women chose to undergo breast surgery, and the statistics used from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons showed some interesting results. According to this study, the most common age group for women to undergo breast augmentation surgery is 30-39. Due to extreme weight loss or pregnancy, breasts will naturally change shape. Breast surgery helps to regain the original size and shape of the breasts which is perhaps why this type of surgery is so popular amongst this age group of women.

It seems that the most common reason for breast augmentation is simply a personal one, such as a self-esteem or self-confidence issues. Other reasons why women decide to get breast implants include correcting genetic chest deformities, breast asymmetry or extreme under-development.

Whilst there are three types of implant placements (unders, overs and partials), the procedure itself does not vary too much. A very small incision is created in the crease under the breast to allow the implant to be inserted. There are a range of implant sizes available to those who wish to have breast enlargement surgery and patients receive an assessment with their surgeon who advises them about the most appropriate size for their individual needs and desires. Women can also opt for a further consultation to help them make their decision.

A study from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) confirms that breast enlargement remains the most popular procedure in the UK. This is supported by the private cosmetic surgery company MYA in their 2013 report. Both reports also demonstrate that rhinoplasty and liposuction are gaining popularity.

Before deciding on cosmetic surgery, it’s important to weigh up different treatment options and pinpoint your own personal objectives when going under the knife. Every patient has different reasons for undergoing surgery but what has become evident is that the popularity of cosmetic surgery is increasing (17% year on year since 2012: BAAPS), with treatments becoming more accessible and carrying less risk due to constant medical advancement.
